Vatu Vara

Vatu Vara, the magnificent and most expensive private island, lies to the west of Mago in Lau Archipelago, Fiji, and since September 2006, it is ready to be sold, with the asking price set at US$75 million.

Also known as “Hat Island” due to its strange shape, Vatu Vara has a unique topography with limestone cliffs covered in dense tropical jungle on one side , while on the other parts, it is circled by a broad fringing reef, which, off the western coast swings sharply away from the shore to enclose the lagoon.

It seems that Vatu Vara is in fact a former atoll, called a ?Guyot? – an extinct volcano that has become overgrown by coral reefs to form an atoll. More than that, the flat top of the island was once at sea level, which is why the summit is flat.

  15. The first two pictures remind me of a giant sheep with a beak instead of a mouth. Or am I the only insane person here ? (Heh) ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. i have always loved this island. one day i will have the money for it!!!!!!!!!

  17. I am one of the few that has been to Vatu Vara. I designed and built the resort on Kaimbu Island 10 miles from it, for Jay Johnson. I worked as an architect and builder on many islands in the Lau Group. I know first hand what it take to have all the amenities of a civilized life from nothing. Getting labor, supervision, and materials is not easy. When I thought about buying the island when the asking price was $75,000. I could not afford what it would take to develope it. Today there are also problems in transfering ownership required by the Fijian Land Council. You would also have to clear at last 2,500 feet for a grass air strip, as I did on Kaimbu. No doctors or nurses for 60 miles to Tavenui. Nothing! Just what you grow or ship in. Even paradise get old after a few years and you long for company. My advice is stay at a 5 star hotel in Bali. and enjoy the service.

  18. i look at this island everyday. it is the thing i want most in this life. i hope that before i die i can sit on the beach at vatu vara. this island is the place of peace and is that not the thing we all look for? i will always work to make this place mine.

  19. Lot’s of luck. If you like it so much, go camping there. See how you like isolation. You are sure to be alone. Bring your own water. No one will be there to supply you or know you exist. Enjoy.

  20. maybe some people like solitude… ๐Ÿ˜› and dreaming is beautiful ๐Ÿ˜‰

  21. you know george sounds like you need a place to find peace. not all people are the same. i live in a place that is very far from a town. i live off the land. i live with no people around me. i have no houses near me. i don’t get high speed internet. the only thing i get is dial up internet. i have no woman but if i had one she would have to want the same dream about vatu vara.
